Question 7: Can I put water in a ceramic vase?

Answer: The answer to this extremely common question is… it depends!

There are three main types of ceramic, which are stoneware, earthenware, and porcelain.

Stoneware is fully waterproof due to the very high temperatures the clay is fired at. This even goes for unglazed stoneware!

As for earthenware, unglazed pieces are not waterproof and will absorb and leak water over time. With that being said, earthenware that has been fired a second time with a proper glaze applied to both the interior and exterior of the piece will safely hold water.

Porcelain is water resistant, but not waterproof. Long-term standing water in a porcelain vase will eventually deteriorate the inner surface of the piece.

Question 8: Does ceramic absorbs water?

Answer: Water Absorption: Resistance to water is perhaps the biggest factor in the ceramic tile vs. porcelain decision. Ceramic tile is more porous and therefore has a higher water absorption rate.
